Grades 1-3 Charles Lindbergh & Amelia Earhart

Exploring the lives of inspiring individuals is our theme this year in grads 1-3.  The two people we've studied most recently are Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart, both famous aviators.  We've learned

about some of their most famous flights and some of their personal and professional struggles.  Our discussion about courage was very interesting because we determined that sometimes you have to overcome one of your fears in order to complete a goal for yourself. Since we were studying aviators and flight, we looked closely at how the two pilots had to modify their planes for long-distance air travel, sometimes taking things normally found in a plane out, and putting other things in, like extra gas tanks.  We made our own airplanes such as the Roaming Ranger, Ayer Rider, or the World's Best Paper Airplane.  We tested the range of our planes, then added an extra gas tank (a penny taped to the plane) in 3 different places to and flew them again to determine the best place on the plane to add a gas tank.  Our findings?  Somewhere in the middle toward the nose, which is one of the locations Lindbergh used.
